TRACK YOUR PAGES PER SESSION!

What is “pages per session”?

“Pages per session” is pretty self-explanatory: it refers to the average number of pages on a website that users access per session. It is not to be confused with page depth, which is the number of clicks it takes to get to a page from the home page.

How to calculate pages per session?

“Pages per Session” refers to a website’s total page views divided by the total number of sessions in a given period of time. You can track the average pages per session in the Acquisition Overview Report in Google Analytics.

What is a good number of pages per session?

According to Little Data, the average number of pages per session was 2.6, although this benchmark depends on industries and other factors. Anything above would be considered pretty good. As always, consistency is key and you ideally want that number to get higher as time goes by and more pages are added.

Pages per session best practices

Here are some of the best practices you should keep in mind in order to achieve a higher average of pages per session.

Pages per session best practices

step 1 icon Optimize the user experience

The longer someone stays on your website, the more they'll get to know your business and that is why you want to have them navigate around and see specific pages that have a high-converting goal. You want to optimize the user experience by focusing on a compelling copy, engaging CTAs, and a user-friendly design.

step 2 icon Add CTAs and internal links

Adding CTAs and internal links can help users navigate from a single page to another with ease, which helps get you higher average pages per session. Without overdoing it, making sure your users are never stuck on a dead-end page can help your chances of them closing the web page.

step 3 icon Track alongside other metrics

Like most metrics, tracking it by itself could be a mistake and can get you to take action that you might regret. To get a more accurate visualization of your marketing strategy as a whole, you should measure other session metrics like new sessions, page views, repeat visits, the average time users spend on your pages, etc.
