What Is a Keyword Ranking? (Definition)
A keyword ranking is the numerical position of a specific webpage in a search engine's organic results for a given search query. If you type "best marketing dashboards" into Google and our page is the fifth result, our keyword ranking for that query is 5. The terms keyword ranking, keyword position, and keyword rank are used interchangeably. They all describe the same thing: the slot your page occupies in the search engine results page (SERP) for a particular query.
A few things to know about how keyword rankings behave:
- Rankings are query-specific. The same page can rank #1 for one query and #50 for another.
- Rankings are user-specific. They vary by location, device, language, search history, and even time of day.
- Rankings change constantly. Google evaluates results in real time, so a position from yesterday may not match today's.
